South Beach Diet Review

south-beach-dietSouth Beach Diet: A Simple Diet Plan That Really Works?

Many popular diets severely restrict many things, and for most people, this may not be easy to keep up with. However, some diets do offer a glimmer of hope when they are less restrictive but do offer results. One such diet is the South Beach Diet, which emerged in 2003 and was designed by a cardiologist and an experienced dietician.

What is the South Beach Diet?

The South Beach Diet was originally designed to prevent heart disease, but over time became a popular weight loss solution as well. The diet has three phases, and each phase becomes easier as than the previous one.

Phase 1 lasts for two weeks and aims to jump-start weight loss. It involves cutting out almost all carbohydrates, sugar, and alcohol. Dieters are allowed to eat high-fiber vegetables, low-fat dairy products, and foods that contain healthy fats.

Phase 2 lasts until the dieter reaches their goal weight. In this phase, some healthy carbohydrates are reintroduced into the diet. Some examples of these healthy carbohydrates include brown rice, fruits, whole-grain breads, starchy vegetables, whole-wheat pasta, and so on.

Phase 3 is the maintenance phase. By this phase you should have gotten a better idea of how to eat healthily, and thus you can eat almost anything you want. The diet allows occasional indulgences in the maintenance phase.

The South Beach Diet is a very simple diet plan that essentially replaces the “bad” carbohydrates and fats with “good” ones that will do your body much more good. The “good” carbs in this diet are selected based on the glycemic index, where carbs with a low glycemic index are considered healthier. The “good” fats, according to this diet plan, are the unsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids.

Is It Worth Trying?

south-beach-foodThe South Beach Diet is a pretty doable diet, once you get past the first two weeks. It is not a starvation diet, and it does teach you to eat the right way. Many people have seen success on this diet and maintained it for the long term.

This diet is also one of the few diets that have some scientific evidence to back up that it is effective, so it’s certainly worth a try if you are looking for a reasonable diet plan to go on.

The plan itself is not too expensive, and you can even buy convenience foods under the South Beach brand if you are too pressed for time to spend hours in the kitchen. However, as with any diet plan, be sure to consult a doctor before starting to ensure that your body will not suffer negatively from your diet efforts.

I’ve personally had success with this diet about 8 years ago, but I found the first two weeks VERY difficult. I wasn’t hungry, but I was very very tired of salad by the 9th day so I found the last couple of days of phase 1 very hard to get through (and I should note that I am a huge fan of salads but every day for 14 days is a bit much). Plus I missed rice a lot (not bread or pasta so much). The diet is definitely effective and doable if you’ve got strong will power, but the Skinny Fiber 90 day challenge is so much easier because there is no strict diet to follow. You could easily do both at the same time and maximize your results!
